DATING RULES FOR HIRING A PUBLICIST

As a publicist, I tend to get a lot of inquires from people looking for publicity services. Some are great and we click right a way to form amazing relationships. But there are others that I am not so sure about off the bat due to their approach with me. The conversation usually goes like this: "Yes, hi my name is Brittany, (no shade to any Brittany that I personally know LOL), and I'm looking for a publicist. I'm wondering what you can do for me because the last publicist that I hired didn't do anything."

I'll stop right there. How many of you get into a relationship and for whatever reason it doesn't workout with that person? You don't starting talking to a new person going into the relationship thinking that they are going to treat you like your ex! Or at least you shouldn't. That relationship will never work out. You can't go into any type of relationship  business or personal expecting the worst! If you feel that strongly about your previous PR Relationship, DON'T HIRE A NEW PUBLICIST! 

On behalf of a real publicist, I apologize for anyone you encountered that was unethical,however, that does not mean that you can treat your next publicist with suspicion or distrust. It makes for an uncomfortable and awkward  relationship when someone is trying to show you the absolute best of them and you have a wall up due to previous experiences with other PR firms, managers,etc.

So before you reach and hire a publicist or anyone else in your business, do a heart check and make sure you have the right attitude prior to making anyone apart of your team.

1.) What inspired you to start your blog?

I started my blog because I was constantly getting the same questions from peers and friends about personal branding and social media. My blog was an easy way to disseminate information to a large group of people at once. 

2.) What are some of your biggest challenges working a 9-5 and owning your own business?

The biggest challenge is always time - not having enough of it. When you work full-time, you have to learn to separate the workflows and be focused on each on individually. When you are really passionate about what you do as a side hustle, it can be hard to stay focused and motivated in your full-time. 

3.) How do you stay motivated when things get tough?

I think about being a millionaire. A lot of times we hear entrepreneurs talk about doing it because they want to help people. I want to help people, but nothing will get me out of bed faster or keep me up longer than knowing I have a bill to pay or a country I want to visit. I work tirelessly so that one day I do have the luxury to do things for the pure satisfaction of helping others. I want to leave a legacy behind and not have my kids worried about Sallie Mae. Right now, wealth is the motive. I have a talent and a gift that I can monetize. Why not make a living doing what I love and helping others in the process?

4.) Whats the best career advice you've been given?

My very first boss Andrea always spoke life into me and reminded me how smart I was and how I would have an amazing career. I don’t think I would have realized my potential or be so fearless in my career if I hadn’t received those constant words of encouragement from her. 

5.) Where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?

Who knows! My life has a very quick pace. In 5 years, I hope to have another degree, a husband, a baby or two… I always think about the future of my life in terms of family life. Career is too unpredictable to try to map out. Anything can change. 

6. Any current projects?

I recently launched my Hustle Hack community where I will be helping newbie entrepreneurs get their brands together and find shortcuts to be better at business. I’m so excited!

7.) Three words of wisdom for aspiring bloggers/influencers?

Communicate your credibility.

 

Toya Wright, Ming Lee, Claire Summers and More: Ladies Who Brunch ATL Recap

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Ladies Who Brunch Business Conference at the glamour Le Fais Do-Do venue in Atlanta, GA. It was a 2 day conference (February 5th-7th), geared towards both aspiring and current female entrepreneurs looking to gain insight into building their brands, having business balance, connecting with others and more.

The first day of the conference consisted of workshops taught by Bianca Rush of Sassy Mitchell Hair,Nicole Garner of The Garner Circle and Dayy Jones of Bella Bar Tees. There were also Fireside Chat sessions which motivated and inspired attendees to take fast action on their dreams, revamp their current business structures and more.

In the evening, there was an amazing dinner followed by an intimate chat with keynote speaker and Founder of CurlBox, Myleik Teele. Myleik gave business gems. “A lot of times when you are here networking, you just have to be in the room, it’s not always about giving something to someone when you first meet them.” She also advised guests to use social media as a tool to be a platform, rather than gaining popularity or likes.

On Sunday, their signature brunch was held. Panelists included Jasmine Lawrence of Eden Body Works; Toya Wright, New York Times best-selling writer (Priceless Inspirations) and Garb Boutique owner;Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily; Ming Lee of Snob Life Studio; and Miss Diddy, The Brand Group LA. The panel was hosted by Ariane Davis of “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.”

Many women traveled from near and far; some flew in by way of NYC and others drove from Mississippi. They all were touched and inspired by the awesome experience. Bonds were created and lives were ultimately changed through the advice given to them.

It's almost that time of the year that EVERY Fashion Guru Lives for: #NYFW! Every Fashion Publicist, Stylist and Designer runs around like a chicken with it's head cut off, stressing over last minute RSVPs and proper seating charts. Now, although I have represented fashion designers and stylists in the past handling their media relations needs, I didn't get the privilege of attending New York Fashion Week until February 2015. The experience was beyond memorable! Here are my 3 tips for navigating through NYC during Fashion Week

1. Be Intentional!- I didn't  have a client attending any of the Fashion Week shows. I was headed to NYC for 2 reasons: It was my first time EVER in the Big Apple and I wanted to connect with some of my favorite editors that have been supporting PR Mentality and the various accounts that I service.  It allowed me a little bit of room to breathe with no pressure of client expectations, demands and the hustle and bustle. Now, if you do have clients attending shows and various events, you definitely need to be attentive to their needs, ensure everything is together in regards to their wardrobe, itinerary, etc

2. Set Up A Deskside With Your Editor BFF - As I said, my intention was to connect with various editors. So I called ahead  and sent emails to schedule a time that worked for me to go in the office. Desksides are a great way for you to get face to face interaction with your favorite editors, continue to build a rapport,  and let them know about your clients endeavors in case they have a new story or piece that they are working on pertaining to that industry. Lucky for me, I was able to set up a nice meet and greet with one of my fave's Marianne Mychaskiw, Assistant Beauty Editor of Instyle.com

3, On Event Day, You Must Slay- Now just because I didn't HAVE to attend any events doesn't mean I was going to miss out on all the fun! I mean what PR girl would! So of course I attended the Tech Style event with my PR sisters Priya Williams,(www.prettimonee.com) and Keshia Jones of Brace'. Now, with NYC being one of the world's greatest fashion capital's, you must show up and show out! Black is the new Black and my all Black apparel worked rather nice for the weather and photo opps. 

Now, disclaimer about the weather LOL! This Midwest girl turned Southern Belle by way of ATL was NOT prepared for that NYC Cold at all!! And I vowed to never return to NYC in the winter again! 

4. It's All About The Press- What kind of publicist would I be if I didn't book press for Fashion Week! Remember, I said I didn't have clients to ATTEND Fashion Week, I never said I didn't have clients working during Fashion Week LOL.  My CBS This Morning segment for the beautiful Madisin Rian, model extraordinaire aired during the first few days of Fashion Week. As a publicist, you absolutely need to book press while you're at NYC Fashion Week or any fashion week/ major event for that matter. It's all about the contacts, contracts and memories you create! Remember, PR Girls Do It Better!

Congratulations, you did it! Graduation has come and gone. You’ve celebrated (maybe a little too much) with your family and friends, and you've been applying for PR jobs every since. However, despite sending your resume out religiously and even landing a few interviews (that quite honestly you thought you nailed), you've have yet to get a job offer. So frustrating.

So, what’s an aspiring PR professional to do?

Well, you could cry and get depressed about life and tailspin into self-doubt and anxiety about whether or not a career in PR is even in the cards for you. But because you were likely attracted to public relations as a career because it requires hard work, a thick skin and creative problem solving, you know it is not in you to give up on your dream so quickly.

Here is what you do: carve out an afternoon of solitude and take yourself on a little career planning retreat. Grab a notebook or open up your laptop and brainstorm how you can reclaim inspiration and gain a clear direction on what you can do, right now, to change your story from bing-watching Netflix to gainfully employed.

Know this: You create your own opportunities

If might not feel like it right now, but you are in a very exciting time in your life where the future has yet to be written.  

So rather that waiting for job listing to appear, make an ideal company list and prepare to proactively reach out to at least twenty PR agencies and brands in your area of interest.  

Getting the job often comes down to being both a cultural fit for where you are applying, as well as having a specific set of skills that interplays well with those of the existing team. Your next task is to take what you know of each company and figure out what exactly about your experience is likely to be most helpful and most interesting to them. Secondly, really hone in on what it is about that company culture, history or product that calls out to your personally. Choose several skills and experiences for each of the companies on your ideal company list and write notes or bullet points as part of your research in a "why me" section. You'll use these notes later when crafting a letter of introduction (make sure to avoid these common cover letter mistakes).

Getting the job often comes down to being both a cultural fit for where you are applying, as well as having a specific set of skills that interplays well with those of the existing team.

Before reaching out to your company contact, ensure that your digital presence, including LinkedIn, social media accounts and Google search results are consistent, professional and up-to-date. Examine your resume and portfolio and give them a refresh (have a trusted friend give them a look and point out anything that is confusing, inconsistent or designed poorly).

Now it's time to ensure you are following each company through social media, and begin engaging with them where appropriate. Then, write a compelling pitch letter addressed by name to an ideal company contact (to make this easier, check out PR Couture's templates for job seekers).

You may choose to simply ask if there are any open positions, to ask for an informational interview, or to simply write a company love letter with a short PS about your career aspirations. Point is, you are taking ownership of your career direction and putting out feelers to get you closer to the job you want.

3 Things You Must Do To Build An Awesome Brand

So 2016 is upon us and everyone (including me) is excited and focused on planning for an amazing year!  We all have various goals and aspirations that we must achieve, like this year, better yet this month right? It's do or die and we are ready to get it in! Well before you send out any emails for your next big collaboration, partnership or interview, you might want to take a look at your overall brand image.  Does it represent you as a business owner  and thought leader in your industry? Is your message clear among your target audience? If not, you definitely have work to do. Here are 3 things that you must have and know in order to build an awesome brand.

1.)  Get Engaged!- No, seriously! You must know what you have to offer your target audience and then be sure to develop amazing content so that you can engage with them on various platforms, ie Twitter, Instagram,  Periscope.  People want to feel like they know you and that they are apart of your life and community. When you are launching your next product, create behind the scenes footage, host a giveaway, do something that is fun and innovative to develop a better relationship with the audience that you already have.

2.) Love Your Selfie!- Let's face it, photos and social media are equivalent to Beyonce' and Destiny's Child, you HAVE to have them, or else it just doesn't make sense! It's important to take high quality photos that speak to who you are as a person and brand owner. You want to always have fresh new content so you'll need to take photos at least every 3-6 months depending on your launch dates, project, etc. And yes, you may as well become BFF's with a selfie stick and a photographer.

3.) Be Willing To Spend A Cute Coin!- Like Rihanna said, Chicks Better Have My Money! (okay, well actually it's your money but you get the point). You must have a BUDGET! Decide on what you NEED to spend your marketing dollars on ie (hosting with Squarespace,  Mailchimp Automation, Photoshoot, Publicist, etc) and then figure out how much you are willing to spend on each. As an entrepreneur, you MUST invest in yourself!! It's the only way to go, plus scared money really doesn't make any money!

4 Tips On How To Work With A Publicist

As you guys may or may not know I had the awesome pleasure of being a virtual panelist on Candice Nicole PR's PoweR Connection #PeriTalk. It was super excited and I wanted to share the amazing experience with my readers as well!!!  As a publicist, I encounter aspiring rappers, business owners, etc who want to take their brand to the next level but don't quite understand the process and TRUST ME! It is a process! So without further adieu, here are my 4 Tips On "How To Work With A Publicist"!

1. Know What You Want- Be specific about what you want a publicist to do for you and your business. Do you research. Know the various services that publicists provide and how they can take you to the next level. Figure out what you need and how it fits into your overall marketing goals.

2. Have A Budget- Before contacting a publicist, you must have a budget! That's why you have to do your homework and figure out how much PR services costs. Typically for full service PR campaigns, you will be required to pay a monthly retainer between $2,500-5,000 per month. Most publicists require the retainer for the first and last month to be paid upfront.

3. Be Prepared- Once you decide on your agency/firm of choice, be sure to have your timelines for your product/service in order. Your website/rebranding phases should be complete, make sure that everything works as it should. Don't try to do test runs in the midst of your PR campaign. If you are in a product based business, make sure you have inventory set aside for media/bloggers as they will want samples to review,etc

4. Be available- Your publicist will need to be in constant communication with you especially when setting up interviews, planning launches,etc. Make yourself available for meetings and stick with them!

3 Entrepreneurs I Am Grateful For

It's that time of the year where we are all reflecting on the past 11 months, figuring out what is working in our lives and businesses, exuding with a spirit of gratefulness. Personally I am very proud of what I have accomplished this year: launched my very FIRST Live course, Know Your Purpose, Know Your Brand (Details coming soon on the next cohort), traveled to new cities,   enjoyed NYC Fashion Week, served tons of clients helping them to get their brand visible, spoke at various conferences, etc. As I prepare for 2016, I must admit (as most of you should) that I've had help along the way. Not just my friends and personal mentors, but there are 5 entrepreneurs (my Business BFFs/Mentors in my head) that I am grateful for. These awesome women  in someway shape or form have inspired me, shifted my mindset and more. 

    

 

 

Tiphani Montgomery is amazing!! This 7 times best selling author and book marketing consultant keeps me motivated in my business and my life by reminding me to keep God first in all things, speak life into my business and to be authentically me!

Maya Elious is truly an inspiration! Being a  millennial (like myself), she is a former web designer turned personal branding strategist. Her go getter attitude and intimate approach keep me on point with my brand and business.

Marshawn Daniels- Her recent Periscope on Being Broke To Building A 7 Figure Business changed my life!! She is a vessel, merging God and business into her coaching platform. I am truly grateful for her insight and application of Biblical principles as an entrepreneur.

Congrats on your new book! What inspired you to write it?

WERK 101: Get-Your-Life-Together Guide is actually the 3rd book I have written but the first one that I've published. It  is the ultimate handbook sharing health, wealth, and lifestyle lessons for the modern-day woman. I'm talking about everything from how to deal with negative people to uncovering your purpose. I want women everywhere to find their purpose, discover their dreams and live a life that they love

You are a DIY entrepreneur, how do you stay focused and productive when developing new products launches etc?

I make an effort to find a common denominator in everything that I do. I organize myself according to specific days. So one day I will schedule all my emails for the week, the next day I may write my blog posts or meet with my team. 

What are 3 key things you attribute to your success this far?

My determination, I don't take the word "no", it motivates me to push harder until I get a yes. I would also say my faith, not only in God but I have a very strong faith in myself. I know that I can do whatever I set my mind to. Lastly, having my team; people that understand the vision and add value to me and my brand.

What's next for you and your many endeavors?

My book tour. I am currently in the planning stages. I want to work around the world, taking my book on the road. I want to impact as many people as possible; empowering women everywhere

What would you say to your 25 year old self?

Be patient. I don't have to be in control of everything or know when it's going to happen as long as I have the vision. I know it will come in time.

Words of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs?

My number 1 rule for anyone who thinks they want to be an entrepreneur is figure out what you love to do and then build a business around it. The Single Wives Club is the  6th business that I've had and it's been successful because it's my passion project. I love what I do and I know I'm walking in my purpose.
